Journalists receive ‘death envelopes’
Related to country: Pakistan

Two senior journalists and a photographer found bullets left as death threats in their cars, on Tuesday night right outside the Karachi Press Club. An envelope each, containing pistol bullets, was stuck on the driver’s side of the windscreen of the cars of two journalists including AFP’s reporter Mazhar Abbas and photographer Asif, while the driver’s side window of the car of Zarrar Khan, journalist of the Associated Press was rolled down and a bullet was found on the driver’s seat. The reporters handed a written complaint to the Karachi CCPO and Saddar TPO. A list issued by the Muhajir Rabita Committee is assumed to be the reason behind the threats. The Karachi Union of Journalists and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists have called for a protest meeting at 1pm on Thursday at the Karachi press club.

Afghan parliamentarian Ms. Malalai Joya suspended
Related to country: Afghanistan

On May 21, 2007 Afghan Parliament suspended a fellow parliamentarian Ms. Malalai Joya for three years and ordered the High Court to file a case against her. They also directed the interior ministry to restrict her movements to within the country. This means she is not allowed to travel outside Afghanistan.
Press for Peace considers that Malalai Joya is a staunch defender of human rights and a powerful voice for Afghan women, and she shouldn't have been suspended from Parliament. It is painful to remind that in November 2005 while answering a BBC correspondent she said , “I know that if not today, then probably tomorrow, I will be physically annihilated, but the voice of protest will continue, because it is the voice of the people of my country." She has survived from many assassination attempts. She has been suspended due to her free voice.
Press for Peace considers that a restriction on freedom of speech is legitimate only if the speech in question poses a clear and present danger to life and property of fellow human beings. In this context, Malalai has posed no threat to life and property of any Afghan national. She should be reinstated immediately and parliament should revise the procedures allowing restriction on freedom of speech.

Political Violence in Pakistan
Related to country: Pakistan

On 12 May, at least 30 people were killed and more than 100 injured in clashes when suspended chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry arrived in Karachi to address a bar council ceremony. After his arrival on Karachi airport at about 1200 hours , there was a heavy bloodshed in the streets between the supporters of different political parties. Justice’s lawyers claimed that security forces tried to forcefully detain him when he landed in Karachi to prevent his address to members of the Bar Association. His defence counsel Aitzaz Ahsan told that "Rangers personnel and police dragged the chief justice to the exit door.

Meanwhile the Police blocked approach roads with containers, tankers and buses, apparently to prevent his supporters from staging a welcome. After spending several hours confined in the airport, he went back to Islamabad. When he was stranded in the lounge of airport at least eight people died in skirmishes outside the airport.

The Citizens of Karachi saw another full day of blood shed and chaos. The dead bodies were lying on the streets and nobody was allowed to pick them up. The injured people shouted for help and there was no one to help them. When camerapersons and reporters, of a private TV channel; lying on ground and taking shelter of the walls, were giving live coverage of the firing on their newsroom, it looked viewers were watching incidents in some remote war torn territory in Afghanistan. But, sadly, it was in Karachi, the city of 16 million people
and the commercial nerve center of Pakistan.
